I've been on an album kick lately so I figured it was about time I got around to giving Drake's hit a shot. NOOOOPPPPEEEEEE!!! (Archer voice)
I'm officially calling this the Drake Complex. Drake has the potential to be one of the best and hardest rappers in the game, I've heard it. The way he "goes in" on I'm Goin In w/ Weezy and Jeezy is sick and his verses on Weezy's I Am Not A Human Being tape (Gonorrhea and Right Above It) rival Wayne's verses on those same tracks.
The problem is on his solo projects. Give him his own album and his own time and taste and he loses me. Apparently he's more into slowing shit down, singing to the ladies, talking it out, etc. His albums can barely be considered rap, or even hip hop, in my opinion. He's an R&B artist at heart and that's fine, it's just not what I want to listen to and it is a shame because he could be sooooooo good.
Take Care is Drake Complex 101, I kept two songs in total: Headlines and Underground Kings. They're the only songs he really gets into with rapping and flow and they're awesome, the rest is weak R&B music at best. Sorry Drizzy fans, but turns out I gotta agree with Common, the dude is "Canada Dry."
Headlines on the Youtubes
Underground Kings also on the Youtubes
