Ace Hood - The Statement

This mixtape very simply exemplifies what I love most about mixtapes. Rappers doing what they do best without the bloat from labels.

When comparing mixtapes to albums, the pros can often be the cons and vice versa, depending on the artist and timing. Sometimes mixtapes are too raw and the artist might sound better with more production and editing and a nice chorus.

Most of the time though, I love mixtapes much more because the artist doesn't have to worry about clearing samples, creating club tracks or singles, or pleasing a label with smooth choruses. They just rap, and often go harder than before. Segue to The Statement.

Ace goes in on this tape, mixing up tempos, methaphors, and freestylin. Almost half the tracks are straight freestyles and that's more than fine with me. Gangsta Shit and the PBS Freestyle stand out but most of the tape is sick.
